It’s MLK Day, hurrah-but-not-so-much. I have been so busy, so stressed and so pre-Aunt-Flo-is-coming-for-her-monthly-very-UN-welcomed-visit blue (not really meant to be a pun about the actual biggest news of January) that, honestly, I haven’t given any thought to MLK day.
No foresight, no planning, no MLK day special-event going, not even an iota of an explanation to R1, the 6 yr. old. In fact, I shudder to admit, I was planning an awards season fashion post for today!
Sigh.
Neglecting the national holiday of the man our son R2 is named after? Sheesh. Really feeling like a bad African-American round these parts.
Though, inequality still exists for African-Americans can you imagine what life would be like if King hadn’t influenced so many or worked so tirelessly to see blacks treated fairly and equally to whites? My freedoms are a part of his dream, and for that I am so thankful.
For more, watch: Dr. Kings amazing ”I have a Dream Speech,” or listen to this powerful NPR, ”This American Life,” episode. If you think your a smarty-pants take this quiz. If you really want to dig deep, the hubs & I would suggest this book: A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings & Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. By: Martin Luther King & Edited By: James Washington.
Happy MLK Day! It’s a day to remember that things don’t have to be as good as they are, nor as bad. Who better than King should inspire us to do what we can to change things for the generation after our own?
I hope and pray that, just like King, my family and I never stop fighting for justice for all people.
