Are intelligent men the new sexy?

Are intelligent men the new sexy?

Are intelligent men i.e. the geek squad, the computer nerds, the new sexy?

It seems the media is having a hay day with images of women desiring a man of greater intelligence and status for the sole purpose of climbing social ladders.  Now, I’m not trying to hate because Lord knows I did this as a teenager and I am not proud of it, but the reality is we all know this happens: men and women use each other…um, differently.

For years though, the intelligent men were seen as nerds, relegated to side-kick status and never got the ladies. They were the men who, had they showed up with an assortment of potential engagement rings in the eventuality you agree to date them, would make you feel totally embarrassed. They are viewed as guys you’ll have fun hanging around with playing Foxy Bingo or watching endless YouTube videos but NEVER on dates. It’d be like going out with Alex P. Keaton as opposed to Kirk Cameron. (I think I really just aged myself here with this 80′s reference). =)

Take 1990s show Saved by the Bell as an example.  I used to flipping LOVE that show! Zack was popular, good-looking, preppy, but not particularly intelligent.  He was the main character, was swooned over by the girls and eventually ended up with the beautiful, girl-next-door Kelly. Now compare this to his best friend Screech, the dorky, puffy-haired nerd who wore bow ties far before Jay-Z & Kanye made them cool. He was intelligent, but mocked. Someone who rarely if ever got the girl.

Nowadays we have shows like The Big Bang Theory, where nerdy-ness is their greatest asset. Being the center of the entire show, they are Halo-playing-comic book readers who eventually get the girls. The attractive head cheerleader type, Penny who lives across the hall, has dated the shy Physicist Leonard on more than one occasion. Leonard is also proved time and again to be the superior choice for her while the unintelligent alpha male she would normally be expected to date, is a repeated source of ridicule.

Oh how the tables have turned.  Perhaps the days of the celebrated alpha male are over and the underdog shall reign supreme? Personally, I wonder if the media has finally caught up to what the population has already known for years. Intelligence is sexy.  Which means, I’m a sexy beast, y’all…turning more and more into a nerd with each passing day. =)

What’s your type?  Is intelligence of greater value to you than looks? I don’t think there’s any wrong answer here.  I hope being a tech-savy, mathlete, geek-a-zoid becomes even more and more en vogue.  After all, I’m pretty sure I married one. LOL.
