This past week, President Donald Trump started to reverse the previous administration’s pro-abortion platform. Trump executed three Executive Orders (EOs) supporting pro-life policies. While these initial policies are a good start, we still must codify them into law. Even though the EO is in place, the next President can quickly reverse it. Once a law is in place, Congress must change it. Trump signed the orders the same day as the March for Life.
What Are the Three Pro-Life Policies Approved by Trump?
The three policies implemented this week by President Trump are:
- Re-establishing the Mexico City Policy and committing to reinforcing the Hyde Act
- Rejoined the Geneva Consensus Declaration
- Scale back enforcement of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act
The three policies are critical to protecting the unborn and eliminating pro-life people from having to fund abortions against their beliefs.
The Mexico City Policy and the Hyde Act
President Ronald Reagan was the first to adopt the “Mexico City” policy in the 1980s.
“The Mexico City Policy prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars to fund organizations that promote or perform abortions overseas.”
“In a separate executive order issued Friday, Trump established the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions, as the official policy of the U.S. government.”
President Biden enacted pro-abortion policies that forced U.S. taxpayers to pay for abortions in the US and internationally. In many cases, paying for abortions went against the taxpayer’s conscience and beliefs. That was not a concern of the prior administration as they pandered to their base – the far left.
The United States Rejoins the Geneva Consensus Declaration
The United States co-sponsored the Geneva Consensus Declaration in the United Nations, declaring “there is no international right to abortion.” The Biden administration withdrew from the Consensus and promoted abortions globally.
“The United States is committed to promoting women’s health and meeting the needs of women, children, and their families at all stages of life,” the diplomatic note stated. “The United States will pursue these objectives in cooperation with member states in the U.N. system and through our continued shared ambition for improved health for women and girls. Investing in women’s health and well-being saves lives, allows women and girls more opportunities, and protects the family as the fundamental unit of society.”
Scale Back Enforcement of the FACE Act
Congress established the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) in May 1994 and prohibits the use of three things:
- The use of physical force, threat of physical force, or physical obstruction to intentionally injure, intimidate, interfere with, or attempt to injure, intimidate, or interfere with any person who is obtaining an abortion,
- The use of physical force, threat of physical force, or physical obstruction to intentionally injure, intimidate, interfere with, or attempt to injure, intimidate, or interfere with any person who is exercising or trying to exercise their First Amendment right of religious freedom at a place of religious worship,
- The intentional damage or destruction of a reproductive health care facility or a place of worship.[1][2]
This law was weaponized under the Biden administration. Pro-life folks were praying outside abortion clinics and were arrested and charged with FACE Act violations. In rare circumstances, they prevent access to abortion clinics. The penalties and prison sentences were excessive. The harassment included morning raids with guns drawn on pro-life advocate Mark Houck. This was indeed government weaponization against their political opponents.
While pro-life supporters have reason to be happy, there is still much work to do. We must continue to do whatever is necessary to protect the unborn. We are all God’s children.
