Trump Addresses Congress: Key Moments and Takeaways March 8, 2025

This past Tuesday, March 3rd, President Trump took to the podium and addressed a joint session of Congress. President Trump is the most polarizing figure in American history. His election mandate in November has energized the country in only the first six weeks, and his administration has “hit the ground running” in his second term. There was drama, of course, in the chamber as he gave his speech. Let’s take a look.

Trump Focuses on Major Accomplishments

Trump’s speech was believed to be the longest in history of Presidential speeches at ninety-nine minutes. Since returning to office, Trump has had substantial wins, along with a couple of setbacks. Here are some of the highlights from the speech:

  • Trump’s signature topic is illegal immigration. He has promised mass deportations after the last four years of open borders. Trump declared a National Emergency at the southern border and closed it completely. Encounters at the southern border have dropped to their lowest levels in 25 years.
  • Trump declared the Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations and stated that they were at war with us. Trump asked Congress for a bill to provide additional funding for border security.
  • Trump has signed Executive Orders stating there are only two genders and banning biological men from participating in women’s sports. Payton McNabb was severely injured when a biological male volleyball player spiked the ball into her face, causing a serious brain injury. She was in attendance at the speech.
  • Trump announced the arrest of one of the terrorists behind the Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan in August 2021. The blast killed thirteen of our brave soldiers.

Democrats Try and Disrupt the Trump Speech

Democrats protested against Trump during the speech. Initial reports had the Democrats bringing in eggs and noisemakers to disrupt the speech, but thankfully, those reports were untrue.

  • Rep. Al Green from Texas was escorted out of the chamber after standing and yelling at Trump, despite requests for him to sit down.
  • A number of Democrats walked out of the chamber during the speech to protest Trump.
  • Many of the democrats held signs saying:
    • This is not normal – they are right about this. The administration has been running at a frantic pace instituting change within the government. Some say too fast, but with no guarantees on keeping the House and/or Senate in 2026, Republicans need to move quickly.
    • Save Medicaid – this is a common talking point of the Democrats, although Republicans have repeatedly stated the only changes to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security will be a cleansing of the rolls, removing dead people and illegal migrants.
    • Many Democrats held signs saying “Musk steals.” This sign speaks to the corruption that Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have found auditing the many departments in the government. DOGE has found significant corruption in a short period of time. Some funding is valid and should not be interrupted; significant funding has been stopped and requires further investigation to determine if charges should be filed. DOGE estimates he current savings at $105B.

At the end of the day …..

The Trump administration has a mandate, and they have acted on this mandate. At times, they have acted too quickly. President Trump is meeting with his Cabinet and DOGE biweekly for better coordination to avoid missteps. As of February 13th, DOGE savings are estimated to be $105B. These are significant savings with more audits on the horizon. There are plans to decommission or significantly slim down some departments. If the republicans and the democrats would work together, this process would go much faster with less noise. Congress can also be an example to the rest of the country in trying to bridge the cultural divide the country is in. I don’t believe many of the members from either party are interested in building bridges. The bottom line is we demand that Congress, DOGE, and the President do what is best for all the people, and yes, that includes those here illegally. They still have basic necessities that must be met while their cases are reviewed.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something much bigger than myself, walking together with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and the terminally ill in local hospitals and Hospice Care centers and found these ministries to be challenging but extremely rewarding.
