Preventable Tragedy in Minnesota

Minnesota saw another tragedy yesterday at an anti-ICE raid, and a young woman is dead. The events around her death are unacceptable and absolutely preventable. This event exacerbated an already highly divisive situation. Let’s take a look.

What Happened?

An ICE agent shot and killed 37‑year‑old Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota yesterday during a federal immigration raid. Federal officials claim she tried to ram officers with her SUV, while city officials and witnesses say the shooting was unnecessary and not self‑defense. Protests erupted immediately, and multiple videos of the incident circulated widely. As expected, there are very different accounts around the incident:

Federal/DHS Version

  • DHS claims Good attempted to run over ICE officers with her SUV.
  • They describe the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism” against federal agents.
  • ICE says the agent fired “defensive shots” to protect himself and others.

City Officials and Witness Version

  • Minneapolis Mayor Frey called DHS’s account “bullshit” and said the shooting was reckless and unnecessary.
  • Witnesses told reporters the woman was trying to turn around when the agent shot her in the face several times.
  • Videos show the agent firing three shots at the SUV, then the SUV rolling forward and crashing.

There are conflicting videos on social media that show the events from different angles.

Contention in Minnesota

The state of Minnesota has seen its share of tragedies over the past few months:

  • In June 2025, Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman was shot and killed in her home in a politically motivated attack.
  • In August 2025, there was a school shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota, killing two children.
  • There is a growing scandal affecting the Somali community in Minnesota that redirected federal funding away from school children it was intended for. The investigation continues on these cases.
  • The shooting death at the anti-ICE raid killed Renee Nicole Good.

Last night, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz threatened to activate the Minnesota National Guard to stop the raids. This action will egregiously enflame a bad situation, and I call on Gov. Walz to back off on this plan immediately.

The Catholic View

I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but the venom in the public discourse has to change immediately. This latest tragedy was very preventable. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have blood on their hands:

  • The Trump administration’s handling of these raids has been excessively “heavy-handed.” The intent initially was to remove the “worst of the worst.” These raids seem to have expanded in their scope, but there is conflicting evidence to support this.
  • Democrat politicians in “sanctuary cities” have demonized ICE to the point where we see violent anti-ICE protests occurring during these raids. ICE officials have taken steps to better protect their officers from attack. Threats of doxxing officers and their family members have only made a terrible situation worse.
  • There have been similar attacks during raids in other major cities in the United States.

Jesus sees every person involved in these actions as infinitely valuable. He would grieve the violence and stand with the suffering. Based on Jesus’ teaching, we should:

  • Mourn with the brokenhearted.
  • Tell the truth about what happened.
  • Seek justice without hatred.
  • Extend mercy without excusing harm.
  • Never forget that every life involved is precious to the Father.

Call to Action

I call on the Trump Administration to back off on the frequency and scope of the raids to allow the situation to calm across the country. I call on ALL politicians to stop with this hateful rhetoric and stop demonizing each other. You are supposed to be elected leaders in this country, and you’re not. Everyone needs to calm down and take a timeout. Let’s all pray that God instills His peace on this situation and leads all sides to work together. Enough is enough. This must change and now!

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and commissioned to lead directees through the 19th Annotation. I am very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding.
