C.S. Lewis Quotes: 10 Inspirational Quotes from C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis Quotes: 10 Inspirational Quotes from C.S. Lewis February 20, 2012

C.S. Lewis is one of the most inspirational and enlightening Christian theologian and novelist of the 20th century.  I was introduced to C.S. Lewis’ writings during college and read many of his works each year to strengthen my faith.  His perspectives on scripture, faith, and God make you think for yourself and challenges you to think about your faith at a deeper level.

These C.S. Lewis quotes are some of the most inspirational of all his quotes and may be the encouragement you need today.

10 C.S. Lewis Quotes To Inspire You

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

-C.S. Lewis, Weight of Glory

“Nothing that you have not given away will ever be really yours.”

-C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.”

-C.S. Lewis

“Thirty was so strange for me. I’ve really had to come to terms with the fact that I am now a walking and talking adult.”

-C.S. Lewis

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

-C.S. Lewis

“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.'”

Jesus: Liar, Lunatic, or Lord

One of the most powerful passages from Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis’ response to those who claim that Jesus was merely a ‘great moral teacher, but not God.’  Every time I read this, I’m reminded that we serve the one and only true God who came to save humanity through his son Jesus.

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

  • An excellent list of Lewis quotes. Like you I read all of his writings in college, but I believe it may be time to read them again. Such a great writer, his impact goes on.

  • I wasn’t aware of some of these books. I will definitely check them out.

  • I only know the Narnia side of C.S. Lewis. I didn’t realize he did so much Christian writing too. My favorite quote above is one of the non-religious ones though….the one about turning 30. It is strange how at that age we suddenly have to face being adults as if we truly weren’t for the last 10 years or so.

  • Great Post! I haven’t read a ton of CS Lewis’ work, but what I have read, I’ve enjoyed greatly. One quote from CS Lewis that I greatly enjoyed was this:

“You don’t have soul. You are a soul. You have a body.”

I just love that! I think that came from Mere Christianity which I have not yet read. I’ll need to, especially after reading some of the other quotes on here from that book!

    Thanks for sharing Tim!

    The Other Timothy

  • Greetings Tim!

Great read! I’m a huge C.S. Lewis fan, my favorite being the Chronicles of Narnia. I want to check out the Screwtape Letters, but haven’t had a chance yet. Maybe once I

    Humbly Yours,

    • Must’ve accidently clicked submit too soon. Please disregard the fragment. :)

  • I love the last quote too, about how Jesus is either a madman, a devil or God. It is so true, if you look at the things he said, there really is not much middle ground..

Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

  • This was such a nice way to start the day, and I always find inspiration from C.S. Lewis. I loved the Narnia series as a child, and I have several of his books on my “To Read List,” I just need to make the time to read them :) Thank you for sharing this!
