8 Job Opportunities for MBA Graduates

After graduating with an MBA in 2009, I watched as a handful of my classmates struggled to find a job.  I was fortunate that I already had a place to work, but the fact was that getting an MBA wasn’t a guarantee for a high paying job or even a raise – especially as the Great Recession was in full swing.

Now that the economy is moving upwards again, the job prospects are looking up for MBAs and other college graduates.  According to U.S. News, 78.8% of the 2011 MBA graduates they surveyed were employed within the first three months following graduation.

While it may have been difficult to find a job between 2009 and 2011, this year is projected to be a strong year for college graduates, especially MBAs.  U.S. News cited 8 jobs that seek out graduates with an MBA degree, so consider these if you’re on the search for new work.

Top 8 Jobs for MBA Graduates

Management Analyst

According to the Labor Department, approximately 26% of management analysts are self-employed.  Larger organizations prefer to work with consultants from top MBA programs like Wharton and Booth School of Business.  But don’t let that keep you from pursuing an MBA and starting a consulting firm or small business of your own.

Financial Analyst

If you’re interested in economics, finance and investments, look for a position with an investment firm as a financial analyst with the prospects of moving up to the position of portfolio manager.

HR Specialist

If you enjoy training and working with people, your MBA could set you apart from other candidates when it comes to a job in HR.

Financial Adviser

While it’s not a requirement to become a financial adviser, an MBA could help an adviser when it comes to credibility.  The ultimate certification you might consider if financial advising/planning is of interest should be the CFP.

Accountant

The field of accounting can be quite lucrative for a recent MBA graduate.  Job placement is high and organizations are always looking for competent business professionals to run the numbers.

Computer Systems Analyst

If information technology or management information systems is your specialty, you can command a great salary at a strong company, especially with an MBA.

Web Developer

The field of web development is growing faster than ever and companies are recognizing the need to employee business minded web specialists.  If you have a background in sales, marketing, economics, or psychology, you should emphasize these skills as highly valuable when it comes to creating websites.  A good website can make or break some companies when it comes to sales, so you’re filling a crucial position in the company.

Database Administrator

The technology field is unique in that it requires you to understand how the systems work while keeping a broad business perspective in mind.  Large and small firms need knowledgeable database administrators, and having an MBA can set you apart for this position.

Do you work in any of these fields?  In your opinion, does an MBA help to set you apart for one of these careers?
