What is Faith?
Are you relying on your own strength to get what you want in life? Learn more about faith and how this powerful tool will give you joy and rest. // Photo by Rachel McDermott on Unsplash

Before I gave my life to Christ, I was living a life where I was always trying to get the answers I needed. I wanted more for my life, but I had no idea how to get what I wanted. Back then, I just wanted to know how to make my life better and how to find healing for my mind, body, and spirit.

During that time, I had enough belief to pray to God every day to ask for protection. I knew deep in my heart that as much as I thought my steps depended on what I could achieve, there was a part of me that realized I had limits. As much as I wanted control, I couldn’t prevent death or certain accidents from happening. I felt like God was in charge of those things, so I spent some time asking for His favor in those areas of my life.

Eventually, I gave my life to Christ, knowing life will never be perfect. I don’t expect to have an easy road or to get whatever I want. But faith is a gift from God. Before, I only had myself to have faith in and to trust, but now I can trust and have faith in God. Now, I can believe in God’s promises, which are far more than I would’ve ever believed capable if I only had faith in myself.

Faith is not about seeing what you can get from God or manifesting something to happen in your life.

If you want something and have a goal and plan to obtain that “thing” in your life, that is great! Achieving any goal will take determination, skill, and perseverance—all great qualities when living a life that glorifies God. However, faith is about expanding your abilities and vision for what is possible.

To have faith, you need to get used to resting and trusting in God’s sovereign will in your life. Leaning on the joy of the Lord is essential. You need to know you may not get what you want, which will not determine your faithfulness to God.

When you are living a life trying to manifest your every heart’s desire into being, you rely on your strength and ability to make it happen. Manifestation is not faith because you are not surrendering to a sovereign God. Instead, you are using whatever power is available to you to achieve what you want in life.

Faith is different because it involves trusting your life and your future to God, who is sovereign over everything in the universe.

When you walk in faith in God, you trust His will, purpose, and plan for your life—and the lives of everyone who walks on this earth.

Some people have issues with faith because it is difficult to control the outcome. You don’t know what might happen or how things might turn out. The truth is that in faith, you might lose more than you gain, and some people do not see the benefit of walking with God and trusting in Him.

Additionally, people struggle to fully surrender to God’s will. Maybe they don’t trust or believe in Him, but also because they want what they want, not what God wants.

Living and walking out a life of faith will include The Lord giving you the desires of your heart. You can trust that His plans for you are good. The moment you begin wanting more for your life will be when you start believing and trusting in Him.

Jesus said that with belief as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains. I never would’ve thought to try to move mountains before becoming a Christian, but faith increases what is possible in your life!

Four Things To Remember When Trusting In God

Faith is a gift from God. You can have faith in any situation simply because God exists, and Jesus came into this world to die for your sins. Turn on the news, and you know evil exists in this world. Turn to Jesus, and you will know goodness and fruitfulness in your life because faith and hope is a gift from Him.

Read God’s Word so you can know His promises. Can you imagine a world where there are no other options than pain and despair? What if our only way of living and walking in this world was one of helplessness and hopelessness? I firmly believe the enemy wants you to think you do not have any other choice; all your options are run out, and you must submit to the pain that is all around you and within you. However, when you know God’s promises, you know there is another option. You can have faith, and you most definitely can have hope.

Faith is about knowing your authority in Christ, not about making demands. Faith can be a powerful tool for every believer, but it is not something to boast about. A humble heart knows that God is sovereign, and belief in Him is not a “magic spell” designed to bring God into your will for your life. A much larger purpose is playing out in this world than your personal agenda or desires. Faith is about becoming aligned with God and His purpose for this world.

Faith is active and requires obedience. Sometimes, faith is about staying still; other times, it is about taking a leap of faith and making big, bold steps forward. Either way, faith is not about being idle or apathetic. Living in faith requires daily surrender and daily movement forward.

If faith is a gift from God, then this way of living is only for those who believe in God.

I am grateful for learning about faith and for the opportunity to walk with God. Instead of relying on myself, I now can rest and find joy in my relationship with Jesus. Sometimes, it would be easier to believe that my efforts are all that can make things happen in my life. Or it would be easier to be pessimistic and believe the worst or not ask for the impossible when I am praying.

However, for anyone who is a believer in Christ, there is always another way, a new option: faith. Faith in God’s sovereignty. Faith in Jesus and what His death did for us on the cross. We believe in our eternal salvation and the new mercies of God every morning.

In Hebrews 11:6 (ESV), it says:

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

God’s purpose and will for your life as a Christian include making choices and living in faith. What areas of your life do you need to surrender to God and believe in Him to move? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
