When you look around the world, it is easy to see so many people struggling and suffering. In my own life, there have been many trials and moments when I have had to lean into my faith even more than other times. The pain I have been through has humbled my heart and taught me to surrender to the will of God.

Lean Into God’s Word During Moments Of Hardship

Hebrews 5:8 (WEB) says, “Though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered.” This verse is about Jesus and how He learned obedience to His Heavenly Father through the suffering in His life. Even as a Christian, it is difficult to embrace the suffering in our lives and to understand the purpose for it.

Lately, I have had to examine so many areas of my life. What I have discovered is that I need to make some changes. However, these changes are not easy and will require small sufferings that I know will lead to the good. But one thing always seems to get in my way: my mindset.

Lean Into God’s Word To Change Your Mindset

Our church is doing 21 days of prayer and fasting. This year, I have chosen a fast I have never done before, and it is centered around my thoughts. It is so easy for me to jump to conclusions, make assumptions, or even make excuses for myself and those around me. But this fast has given me several opportunities to take every thought captive and examine what I am allowing in my mind and my life.

What I think and focus on will determine my steps and how I persevere through the struggles and suffering in my life. But I know I need to take the steps necessary to make the changes I know God wants me to make.

Learn How To Become Obedient To God Through His Word

Obedience to God and His Word is a difficult lifestyle to embrace. It usually requires some sort of sacrifice and most likely will include self-discipline. In your effort to grow and lean into the Holy Spirit’s promptings to be more obedient, your mind will be the biggest hurdle because it will want to continue with what it knows.

The problem with making changes is that your mind wants to avoid the unknown and being overwhelmed. The key to change will always be living a transformed life and taking every thought captive.

Mediate On Your Favorite Bible Verses

I do this through God’s Word. My favorite verses in the Bible typically have a promise from God that I need to lean into when things are not going my way or when the struggle becomes too much.

Just this morning, I realized God’s promises were on the other side of comfort and my normal routine. Even a simple decision to go work at the library instead of at home was an act of obedience for me. This small choice is bringing a fresh new perspective to the daily mundane.

However, this choice and shift in what I am used to doing every day did not come through clinging to my old way of thinking. My old way of thinking would’ve made me stay home because I wasn’t feeling good.

Shift Your Focus And Experience The Transformed Life

One key component of changing my mindset and getting through this season of fasting, the negative thoughts and perspectives, is God’s Word. Leaning into my faith means leaning into God’s promises, His character, and most of all, His truth.

Philippians 4:8 (WEB) says, “Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things.God’s Word falls under every category listed here.

If you change your mindset and become obedient to God through every season of your life, including the seasons of struggle and suffering, you must lean into God’s Word.

Here are ten of my favorite scriptures in the Bible:

1. He who follows after righteousness and kindness finds life, righteousness, and honor. – Proverbs 21:21

I love how this verse tells you exactly what rewards await the one who follows after righteousness. Staying true to your convictions and maintaining boundaries is not easy and might require you to miss out on a lot of opportunities in this world. However, this verse is a beautiful reminder that what you gain is worth much more than what you sacrifice.

2. Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses. – 1 Timothy 6:12

Walking in faith is not a “cakewalk,” and this verse is clear about that. This verse reminds us that we will need to fight to keep the faith sometimes. There will be moments when we might feel like we need to let go of our faith. But I have learned that the darkest moments of life are not the time to walk away from our faith; instead, they are when we need to lean into our faith even more.

3. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient. – Matthew 6:34

Sometimes, I wonder how I will get through certain events in my life. Fears hover in my mind, threatening to steal every ounce of joy that I have right now. But this verse reminds me to trust God with my tomorrow. I have faith that He will give me the grace to endure whatever comes my way and will continue to give me grace for today.

4. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. – 2 Corinthians 5:17

I think getting lost in the past and old ways of living and thinking is very easy. How many times do you feel haunted by what you did in the past? Sometimes, fighting regret is like playing “wack a mole” in your mind. Although you are a new creation in Christ, the thoughts and memories don’t go away.

However, this verse is a reminder you can cling to when trying to rid your mind of regret. There have been so many moments in my life where I have experienced the Holy Spirit covering my memories. Then, my heart and emotions follow the new, redeemed path before me instead of getting lost in the darkness of my past.

5. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. “In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples. – John 15:4-8

The temptation in this world is to belong and be accepted at all costs, even if it costs you your boundaries, self-respect, and even your faith.

We all want friends, and I know we all need a healthy and life-giving support system. God designed us to be in relationships with others.

However, I know that abiding in Jesus and maintaining your relationship with Him is the only way friendships, marriages, and any relationship in your life will be fruitful.

6. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? – 1 John 5:5

There are days when it feels like the world is overcoming me instead of me overcoming the world. This verse reminds me to keep holding onto the hope I have in Jesus, and the promise is that I will overcome the trials I am facing.

7. My little children, let’s not love in Word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth. – 1 John 3:18

Relationships are difficult, yet they are the key focus of our lives. There is very little anyone can do on their own. We all crave connection and want to find success in our lives. You may want to live an abundant life, but your relationships are a mess. This verse is the recipe for the foundation of any relationship that will flourish.

8. Our soul has waited for Yahweh. He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let your loving kindness be on us, Yahweh, since we have hoped in you. – Psalms 33:20-22

Faith, hope, and love are often a choice to keep trusting in the Lord and being obedient to His Word. This verse reminds us that God is trustworthy even when life is proving to be the most painful and unpredictable.

9. Many sorrows come to the wicked, but loving kindness shall surround him who trusts in Yahweh. – Psalms 32:10

Another promise is that when we trust in God, we will experience His grace, mercy, and lovingkindness in our lives.

10. But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. – James 4:6

One of my favorite verses reminds me that my life has no place for pride. I have nothing to boast about because it is all grace. Every area, blessing, moment, and struggle reminds me of God’s grace.

I hope my ten favorite Bible verses encourage you to live a transformed life and lean into your faith when life becomes dark and unpredictable and you wonder if the seeds you have planted throughout the years will bear fruit.
