I recently started college to earn my Master’s degree. I am always amazed at the new stuff I learn while in school. Not that I feel like I know everything there is to know, but I am mainly surprised to learn there is SO much I don’t know. The writing “fountain of knowledge” seems never-ending at this point.
As much as I don’t know about my profession and what I am learning in school, there is so much more I don’t know about God. It can be so simple to put daily Bible reading on my to-do list, but reading the Bible is about so much more than that.
Here are five benefits of reading the Bible every day.
Increased Knowledge Of God
But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for I delight in these things,” says Yahweh. – Jeremiah 9:24 (WEB)
If you want to truly know God, reading the Bible is the answer. If you feel like you already know everything there is to know about being a Christian, then I would humbly tell you that you are wrong. The depth of knowledge you have in Christ is nothing compared to what you can find by reading God’s Word and living out your faith daily.
Spiritual Growth
as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow, – 1 Peter 2:2 (WEB)
Just like school, reading your Bible will not only help you expand your knowledge of a certain topic, but it will also help you to grow spiritually. Being stuck in any area of your life is hard, but you don’t have to be. Spiritual growth requires many leaps of faith and will require you to be wise in your decisions and life choices.
Improved Prayer Life
If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. – John 15:7 (WEB)
Reading God’s Word increases your knowledge of His will for your life and the lives of those around you. Knowing God’s will aligns your prayers with what He wants. God wants good things for you and me, even those who seem distant from Him. It helps you understand what to pray for and how to communicate with God more deeply.
Renewed Mind
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things. – Philippians 4:8 (WEB)
There have been so many moments in my life when reading the Bible has drawn me out of my pain, unforgiveness, anxiety, and depression. Not only has the Bible given me answers to the questions I had in my life, but it has also encouraged me to ask harder and deeper questions about my faith. I have learned that if I want to have a renewed mind, I need to be willing to go deeper in my faith and understanding of God’s Word.
Spiritual Armor
For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12 (WEB)
I don’t know if we truly realize how vulnerable we are. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Evil exists, and we have a real enemy who is after us. This doesn’t require any Christian to live in fear, but it does require us to be equipped to fight the battles in our lives. I know life is unbearable sometimes, and the trials do not always make sense. But walking away from God and His word in those moments is not the answer. Our spiritual armor and weapons come from God’s Word.
Don’t Walk Away, Dive In
I do not know how I would do this life without God. There have been many trials, questions, and disappointments, but walking away from God has not been the answer for me. Instead, in those moments, I have learned to dive deeper into my faith, and I do this by reading God’s Word, prayer, and worship.
