** EDIT ** This post is about why Christians should reject Donald Trump. To read six suggestions of the Christian response to Trump, click the image below, or follow this link. ** EDIT **   (UPDATED Feb. 7, 2025) Donald Trump is everything the Bible warns against, in both the New Testament and the Old Testament. What does the Bible say? Repeatedly, Jewish scripture describes ungodly people exactly the way we can describe Trump. “For fools speak folly, their hearts... Read more

Notes From a Sermon: Earthly Wisdom and Godly Wisdom James 3:13-18, 4:1-8, talks about two kinds of wisdom. Earthly wisdom and Godly wisdom. Bitter envy and selfish ambition arise from earthly wisdom, the letter says. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. Think of those people in our lives, in history, and in the country, who demonstrate earthly... Read more

Do Christians need to be reminded that racism is immoral? Evidently. In the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and convicted felon Donald Trump, Trump abandoned his usual, thinly-veiled racist dog whistles and went full volume with the ridiculous lie that black people eat their neighbor’s pets. “A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so embarrassed by it. In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats.... Read more

“Going to the Dogs” Notes from a sermon on Mark 7:24-37. 24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia.... Read more

Notes From a Sermon: James 1:17-27 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of all he created . . . Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not... Read more

Aug. 28, marks 61 years since Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and announced to the world that he had a dream. Today, King’s dream is far from a reality. King was having a significant 1963. That spring, King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led demonstrations and economic boycotts in Birmingham, Ala., where the local law enforcement was notoriously anti-integration and the state’s white supremacist governor declared in his inaugural address, “segregation now,... Read more

Aug. 20 marks the anniversary of the 1965 murder of Civil Rights Activist Jonathan Daniels. Daniels, a 26-year-old Episcopal seminary student, was murdered while saving a 17-year-old African-American girl from a shotgun blast. Valedictorian of Virginia Military Institute’s Class of 1961, Daniels knew exactly what he was doing when he saw the shotgun leveled at Ruby Sales and pulled her out of the way. Daniels responded to Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for more ministers to get involved with the... Read more

A brief Aug. 12 news story about convicted felon Donald Trump is worth noting. According to the Associated Press: “The New York Times cited two people who, on different occasions, heard Trump call Harris a “b——.” The people were granted anonymity to describe private discussions.” Trump Campaign Designated Liar Steven Cheung said, “That is not language President Trump has used to describe Kamala and it’s not how the campaign would characterize her.” Cheung is lying, of course. (Fascists use lies... Read more

On Aug. 12, 2017, racists from across the country gathered in Charlottesville, Va., to joyfully celebrate one of their own in the White House and to protest the removal of segregation-era statues of Confederate leaders. Anti-American, anti-Semitic racists paraded through Charlottesville brandishing images of bigotry and hate, culminating in a racist white male driving his car into a crowd of people, killing Heather Heyer and wounding dozens. President Donald Trump repudiated the driver, but went on to defend the neo-Nazis... Read more

When the United States detonated a plutonium bomb over the Catholic Urakami Cathedral in Nagisaki, Japan on Aug. 9, 1945, 10,000 Christians were among the 70,000 unarmed children, women and men killed in the flash of a second. Christians killing Christians. Three days before, the U.S. dropped the first nuclear bomb on the people of Hiroshima. Six days after Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the Allies, effectively ending the war. Americans have little of idea of the breadth of human suffering,... Read more
