Newsbites: Stop-motion animation! Junebug!

Two more things have just grabbed my eye.

1. The Associated Press has a fun little article on stop-motion cartoons — an artform so rare, it is a little strange to realize there are two such films coming to theatres in the next five weeks: Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, and Nick Park’s Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. An even stranger coincidence: both films co-star the voice of Helena Bonham Carter. I had not made that connection yet. (FWIW, I interviewed her years ago for the UBC student paper The Ubyssey; see page 3 of this PDF file.)

2. I just got a notice regarding an upcoming press screening of Phil Morrison’s Junebug, about a Northern woman who marries and meets her dysfunctional Southern in-laws. I have no idea what to expect from this film, but the press release quotes one of the characters telling her husband: “God loves you just the way you are. But he loves you too much to let you stay that way.” I like this line. I have no idea how it is played — it could indicate the wife’s compassion or judgmentalism — but on its own, I do like it.
