Fleming & John do a fairy-tale soundtrack!

According to the IMDB, Hoodwinked! — a wacky riff on fairy tales that is one of the ten films eligible for this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar — opens in Los Angeles tomorrow, but although it was once slated for a December 23 release, it doesn’t open anywhere else now until January 13. So I probably shouldn’t say anything about the movie itself just yet.

But I will say I was pleasantly surprised to see the words “SCORE BY … JOHN MARK PAINTER” in big letters up on the screen. I stuck around for the credits at the end, and sure enough, Painter co-wrote a couple of songs in addition to the score, and his wife Fleming McWilliams co-wrote at least one of ’em herself.

It also turns out that the Hoodwinked! soundtrack came out last Tuesday — so I figured Fleming & John fans might want to know. (It has been far, far too long since their last album.)

DEC 16 UPDATE: Whoa! I just discovered that director Cory Edwards is a Christian stand-up comedian. Interesting!

DEC 17 UPDATE: And now I learn that it was Benjamin Gaither, son of gospel recording artists Bill and Gloria Gaither, who provided the voice of Japeth, “a goat who, because of a spell cast by a mountain witch, is forced to sing rather than speak.” The Hollywood Reporter also has a story up on low-cost CGI features, which states, “Just how this fairy tale arrived in theaters illustrates the changing animation scene.” Curiouser and curiouser.

JAN 13 UPDATE: My preview for BC Christian News and my review for CT Movies are now both online.

MAY 2 UPDATE: My interview with Cory Edwards is now online.
