The Toronto International Film Festival Group has announced this year’s top ten Canadian films, as selected by a panel of ten film critics and members of the Canadian film industry. Somehow, despite poor distribution for Canadian films in general and my own unusually poor attendance at this year’s Vancouver film festival, I have already seen five of them (in bold):
C.R.A.Z.Y
Familia
A History of Violence
Horloge Biologique (Dodging the Clock)
The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico
Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company
La Neuvaine
A Simple Curve
Water
Where the Truth Lies
In addition to the five that I have seen, C.R.A.Z.Y. is currently playing in local theatres, so I may be able to bump my seen-it count up to six. I expect the Pacific Cinematheque will probably host a series devoted to these films in the near future, too.
And just for the record, I really liked La Neuvaine (my blurb) and Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company. The other three that I have seen were all interesting in various ways and to various degrees, too; and FWIW, I’m actually pondering whether or not to include A History of Violence in my own top-ten list.
