Yep, The Break-Up trounced X-Men: The Last Stand, all right.
The Break-Up is estimated to have grossed $38.1 million in its first weekend, which is easily the highest opening weekend for any film featuring Vince Vaughn or Jennifer Aniston in a leading role.
However, if we count supporting roles, The Break-Up marks Vaughn‘s third-highest opening, after The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997, $72.1 million) and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005, $50.3 million), and Aniston‘s second-highest opening, after Bruce Almighty (2003, $68 million) — indeed, The Break-Up‘s opening weekend alone beats the lifetime gross of all but three Aniston films, namely Bruce Almighty ($242.8 million), Along Came Polly (2004, $88.1 million) and Rumour Has It… (2005, $43 million).
Meanwhile, The Da Vinci Code is poised to become the top-grossing film of the year worldwide, at least for a while; at $581.7 million, it currently trails behind Ice Age: The Meltdown‘s $626.3 million, but it is way, way ahead of all the other competition, and it could pass that in a week or two. And FWIW, The Da Vinci Code is currently #32 on the all-time worldwide chart, while Ice Age: The Meltdown is currently #27.
Also noteworthy: The Al Gore global-warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth cracked the box-office top ten, grossing $1.3 million in only 77 theatres (it doesn’t open in Vancouver until next week), and thus netted the highest per-screen average of the lot ($17,298, versus The Break-Up‘s $12,395).
