‘His Dark Materials’ gets a release date

This might be old news to some people, but in the handful of posts that I have made on the directors coming and going from The Golden Compass (the first installment in Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy), I don’t recall ever noticing, let alone mentioning, whether the film had a release date.

Well, apparently a release date has been set — despite what seems like a problematic pre-production! Ain’t It Cool News posted several pictures today from the New York License Show, including this one, and it seems the film is set to come out in 17 months.

And when you think about it, that’s pretty much the only time the studio could release the film — at least if they want to avoid clashing with other British-fantasy franchises. The Harry Potter movies are coming out every year-and-a-half now, so the next one is due in the summer of 2007; and Prince Caspian, the next Narnia movie, was recently moved to the summer of 2008. And then the next Harry Potter movie might very well come out the following Christmas or thenabouts. So, if we’re sticking to the lucrative summer and winter seasons, that would leave just winter 2007.
