Variety reports that Bon Cop, Bad Cop has passed Porky’s (1982) to become the top-grossing Canadian film within Canada, ever:
Alliance Atlantis also announced Tuesday that Montreal-made bilingual action-comedy “Bon Cop Bad Cop” has passed “Porky’s” to become the top-grossing local film ever in Canada. “Bon Cop” has grossed $10.2 million since its launch Aug. 3, with ticket sales of $8.1 million from its French version and $2.1 million from its English version. “Porky’s,” which was released in 1981, grossed $10 million in Canada.
This does not make it the top-grossing Canadian film ever, per se, though, since Porky’s raked in a lot of American moolah for a combined $105.5 million gross, and Bon Cop, Bad Cop hasn’t even opened south of the border yet — and there’s a good chance it never will. And then of course there’s inflation to consider.
Incidentally, this bit of box-office news comes at the end of an article on the success of Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, which grossed $1.3 million over the three-day weekend — that’s slightly higher than the figure I reported here, but at any rate, it’s one of the biggest openings ever for an English-Canadian film, and enough to rank the film #11 for the weekend in North America, if the North American charts had bothered to include it. And who knows — eventually, they might; the Canadian Press reports that negotiations to release the film stateside are in the works.
OCT 11 UPDATE: And now this Canadian Press story claims: “Sales for ‘Bon Cop, Bad Cop’ have totalled $11.3 million across the country, beating out the raunchy Florida-set 80’s comedy which cashed in $11.2 million at the Canadian register years ago.” So there’s another set of figures, just to confuse us some more.
