Newsbites: Prison! Frisbee! Thing! Dixie Chicks!

Newsbites: Prison! Frisbee! Thing! Dixie Chicks!

Just a few more quickies before I go to bed.

1. Yet another movie is going into wide release now without being screened for critics! I refer, of course, to Let’s Go to Prison.

2. Frisbee: The Life and Death of a Hippie Preacher (2005) is now available for sale on DVD. Director David Di Sabatino writes:

The movie is a sleek and fast-paced 60 minutes, but almost everything that was in the longer version is jam packed into another 60 minutes of extras that go through some chapters that were pulled through the movie’s various edits.

3. A fourth version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is in the works, so why not a third version of The Thing from Another World (1951), previously remade — or was it a sequel? — by John Carpenter as The Thing (1982). Variety says Battlestar Galactica producer Ronald D. Moore is working on the screenplay.

4. Vancouver apparently sure likes Shut Up & Sing: Dixie Chicks. Festival Cinemas sent out a press release this week announcing that the Fifth Avenue theatre has, for the past two weeks, set the record for most tickets sold for that film. It “grossed nearly $45,000 in ten days on just one screen, out-performing such markets as Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto. The film earned over $18,000 on both opening weekend and the weekend of November 10 – 12, impressively dropping by just 4%.”
