The nominations for this year’s Genie Awards came out yesterday, and surprise, surprise, four out of the five Best Motion Picture nominees are from Quebec.
It is interesting to see how this list matches — or doesn’t — the top ten list that was issued last month by the team that runs the Toronto film festival. Only two of this year’s Best Picture nominees were on that list, namely Un dimanche à Kigali and Trailer Park Boys: The Movie — though another “top ten” film, Manufactured Landscapes, has a Genie nomination for Best Documentary.
Two of the other “top ten” films have been nominated in other categories, namely Congorama (actor, screenplay, editing) and The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (costume design). But there were no nominations at all for Away From Her, Monkey Warfare, Radiant City, Sharkwater or Sur La Trace D’Igor Rizzi.
Leading the pack with 13 nominations is — what else? — a biopic about a hockey player, which is called Maurice Richard in French and The Rocket in English. The other nominated films are:
- Bon Cop, Bad Cop, with 10 noms in 9 categories;
- Un dimanche à Kigali AKA A Sunday in Kigali, with 7 noms;
- Tideland, with 6 noms;
- Eve and the Fire Horse, with 5 noms;
- La Vie secrète des gens heureux AKA The Secret Life of Happy People, with 5 noms;
- Cheech, with 4 noms;
- Guide de la Petite Vengeance AKA The Little Book of Revenge, with 4 noms;
- Snow Cake, with 4 noms in 3 categories;
- Beowulf & Grendel, with 3 noms;
- Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, with 3 noms;
- La Rage de l’ange AKA Angel’s Rage, with 2 noms;
- Le secret de ma mère, with 2 noms;
- The Journals of Knud Rasmussen, with 1 nom;
- Niagara Motel, with 1 nom;
- Whole New Thing, with 1 nom;
… as well as the usual smattering of short films, documentaries, and nominations for best original score or song.
