Terminator vs. Sarah Connor — the timelines!

Terminator vs. Sarah Connor — the timelines! May 18, 2007

I haven’t commented on recent Terminator developments yet.

Last week, the newly-formed Halcyon Co. bought the rights to the franchise and announced that it planned to make not one new movie, but a whole trilogy of new movies — and this was quickly followed by rumours that the new films might include a digital Arnold Schwarzenegger and an actual Nick Stahl. One detail that I don’t think was cleared up is whether MGM is still involved.

Then, yesterday, Fox TV said it was adding The Sarah Connor Chronicles to its line-up next season — and at the network’s official website, they clarify that Firefly‘s Summer Glau will be playing a good Terminator rather than one of the bad Terminators.

I notice, BTW, that the official synopsis says Glau’s character poses at first as “an enigmatic and otherworldly student at [John Connor’s] high school” — and that John is supposed to be 15 years old when this series takes place. John Connor was 10 years old in the second film, and thus too young for high school — so does this mean he goes back to school after the events of the second film? Then again, the third film revised the back-story so that he was 13 years old during the events of the second film, after which he “disappeared” and stayed “off the grid” — so perhaps he bumps into Glau’s character a couple years later and remembers her from his high-school days? Or have the writers tweaked his age again so that he was 15 years old during the second movie — in which case, you’ve got to wonder why the good Terminator at school didn’t team up with the good Terminator who came back in time to help John during the second movie. Can’t these guys co-ordinate?

Fox calls this series “an exciting reinvention” of the franchise, so I’d bet they’ve gone and revised everything again. Which should make comparing and contrasting the timelines of the TV series and the upcoming movie sequels quite the surreal experience.
