Pirates of the Caribbean — down to the wire!

Bizarre. Colleagues of mine in New York, Chicago, Seattle and Washington DC have all told me that they won’t be getting a chance to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End until Monday the 21st. And as far as I can tell, Vancouver won’t be getting any previews of the film — which opens Thursday the 24th at 8pm — at all, though critics and whatnot might be allowed to see it for free on opening night. This is pretty unusual for such a major tentpole pic. Then again, rumour has it that the special-effects team has been working overtime to get the film ready for its release next week, so I’m not surprised this is so down-to-the-wire. On the other hand, the BC Film Classification board did post its rating for the film last Friday, and I assume they saw a finished print.

UPDATE: I just got word that there will be a press screening — on Wednesday, the day before the film opens. Monday is a holiday here in Canada, so I guess that day wouldn’t have worked.
