Baby, it’s cold outside, indeed.

Baby, it’s cold outside, indeed.

In one of his recent political columns, Mark Steyn mentions the song ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ and then casually observes that “Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban introduced it in the film Neptune’s Daughter.” Indeed, not only did they introduce it; it went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1950.

But still … Ricardo Montalban!?

Yup, turns out he was playing a character named José O’Rourke. Which is kind of funny, because Montalban went on to play the similarly-named Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island (1977-1984).

And I cannot help but be reminded of this line that he has as the title character in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982):

Ah, Kirk, my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold… in space…

There has got to be some way to mash that line and this song together. “Ah, Kirk… baby… it is very cold… outside… in space…”
