The official website for The Nativity Story has two new items up now: a featurette on the production design (apparently it’s harder to design a poor village than a rich city), and the first theatrical trailer (technically, the earlier trailer was a “teaser”).
The trailer starts off on sort of a Da Vinci Code note — stylistically, that is — with references to Hebrew prophecies and the like …
… before proceeding to the basic story points, including this scene where Mary’s parents accuse her of bringing shame to them and to Joseph (and note how everyone is squeezed into the frame!):
I like some bits in this trailer, and I’m not sold on others; but it doesn’t make much sense to judge any of these clips without seeing them in their narrative context, so I won’t. That said, a glimpse of Mary and Joseph falling into a river does feel uncomfortably like that utterly gratuitous ice-floe action scene in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005).
