My review of Just My Luck is now up at CT Movies, as is my review of Art School Confidential. FWIW, one thing that didn’t occur to me until after I wrote the Just My Luck review is that, at the time this movie was filmed (between January and April 2005, according to the IMDB), Lindsay Lohan was 18, while the actors playing her best friends — Bree Turner and Samaire Armstrong — were 28 and 24, respectively. Yet these... Read more

My article on Christian responses to The Da Vinci Code is now up at CT Movies. A shorter version will appear in the magazine. This will probably be my last published item on the film before I see it and review it next week. And yes, this is the article I was researching when I commented two weeks ago on Entertainment Weekly‘s odd suggestion that evangelicals are “planning protests and boycotts” while Catholics are merely keeping “quiet”. Speaking of which,... Read more

In 1988, Christians picketed theaters that showed The Last Temptation of Christ. Today, they’re trying to find ways to “engage” a new controversial movie — The Da Vinci Code. Two decades ago, Christians took a stand against Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. When a draft of the script was made public, protestors compelled Paramount to abandon the project, and when Universal produced the movie a few years later, in 1988, Campus Crusade for Christ founder Bill Bright offered... Read more

Last year, my film column for BC Christian News placed fourth in the “Standing Column” category at the Evangelical Press Association awards. Today, my editor at CT Movies tells me my review of The Exorcism of Emily Rose placed fourth in the “Critical Review” category. Woo-hoo! I’ll post more details as they come. MAY 12 UPDATE: The data is now in, and the rankings are: 1. Books & Culture, “The Gospel According to . . . ” by Andy Crouch2.... Read more

A couple weeks ago I mentioned that Scott Derrickson is working on a film adaptation of John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Now he’s adapting another story with that title — sort of. ComingSoon.net reports that Derrickson and co-writer Paul Harris Boardman are now adapting Mara Leveritt‘s book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, which concerns the real-life murder of three boys and the imprisonment of three teenagers who were accused of the crime based on... Read more

Time for a few more news links. 1. Just last month, it was reported that girls were being auditioned for the part of Lyra Belacqua in The Golden Compass, the first installment in Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy. But now The Hollywood Reporter says director Anand Tucker has left the project — for creative reasons or budgetary reasons, depending on who you listen to — and Chris Weitz is back on board. 2. Reuters has a story on Saint... Read more

Hairy, isn’t he? The photo here is from a story in last Thursday’s USA Today on Evan Almighty, the upcoming sequel to Bruce Almighty (2003) which stars Steve Carrell — who may be best-known as The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) — as a modern-day Noah. Read more
