In 2008 I first entered seminary and quickly found myself passionate about justice issues with a fervor I hadn’t experienced before. The issue that ended up blinking the brightest on my justice radar was the issue of human trafficking– something often reported to be the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. What had long been carried by secular circles had quickly become a Christian issue, and I wanted to get in on the ground floor early on. The idea that human trafficking–... Read more

10. Teach them every human being has unsurpassable worth.  A nonviolent ethic of love begins right here, and nowhere else. Jesus followers embrace nonviolent enemy love precisely because every human being, regardless of their outward appearance or even immoral behavior, bears the divine image of God and has unsurpassable worth to God. We must live in such a way, and raise our children in such a way, that they learn to intrinsically see the divine worth of every human being instead... Read more

The Old Testament is tricky ground. It always has been. In it, you will find something that’s often referred to as “The Law” (insert dramatic theme music). The Law, attributed to Moses, contains 613 rules and regulations that Israel used to keep order in their society during ancient times. You’ll find some nice stuff in there– don’t kill sounds nice to me, and I love the protections afforded to immigrants, but you’ll also find plenty in the law that is... Read more

I’ve been spending a lot of my summer this year sitting by the ocean and reading. My favorite book of the year, by far, has been Reba Riley’s memoir, Post Traumatic Church Syndrome. ‘Cause if there’s one syndrome I have, it’s definitely that one. The book is ridiculously funny and captivating– a memoir about trying 30 religions before Reba’s 30th birthday in hopes to find healing from her past church trauma. (Psssst… you can get your own copy by clicking on... Read more

This post is part 2 of a series on human trafficking I am doing with trafficking survivor, Meg Munoz. In this post, I’ve asked her if she’d share her story with us. You can find part one, here. … BLC: From what I know of your story it seems you have experience / a keen understanding of multiple sides of the sex industry and human trafficking, having a story that stems from both ends of the spectrum. Can you tell... Read more

I’m not going to lie, what I just read is the dumbest thing I’ve read in my life. I’m not trying to be overly or unnecessarily critical, either. It just really, truly, is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. I had to read it three times to make sure it wasn’t the Onion. Charisma Mag (I know, I know… I stopped reading them a while ago, but this one came in my FB feed a few times) is broadcasting a prophesy... Read more

Over the last 24 hours, the internet has been in uproar over the death of a creature named Cecil The Lion. I hadn’t heard of Cecil until now, but as the story goes, he’s one of Africa’s most famous lions. Cecil was a collared animal tending his pride that includes up to 24 cubs in a national park in Zimbabwe. He was hunted and killed by Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minneapolis who already had a felony record for poaching an... Read more

“But I believe the WHOLE Bible.” It’s a very common phrase I hear in Christian circles. In the course of teaching others to live how Jesus lived, to do what Jesus did, and to follow what Jesus taught, there are no shortage of objections to the idea. Sadly, those who most often object to the radical notion we should actually follow what Jesus did and obey what he taught, are fellow Christians. While we may love to sing, “I have decided to... Read more
