Regardless of Who’s in Power… We Have Each Other 2014-11-06T18:01:36-05:00

Tuesday was election day and for those of us working for the human rights of the humans who so happen to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, it was not a good day.

This is Rob writing again today, but I speak for both Susan and myself.

There have been several times in my life when I have been frustrated with politics and with those to whom we have given the privilege of being in power in our country, our states and cities – on both sides of the aisle. But regarding the LGBTQ issue, my heart is heavy.

Maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe it brings us back to what is important, unshakeable.

Elected officials come and go. One side gets control. Then the other side gets control. Then they share control and we hope they play nice. Laws are passed, laws are struck down. The merry-go-round never stops.

The courts are ruling in favor of marriage equality, but elected officials still have a huge impact in many areas including job protection, public access, housing protection, adoption, family recognition, and there is a real threat of more anti-LGBT legislation and especially anti-trans ordinances.

I do not know what challenges and struggles the future holds for those in the LGBTQ community and for those of us who are committed to loving, supporting and advocating for them.

But I do know one thing, we have each other…

On days of victory, we celebrate together.

On days of darkness, we light another’s path.

On days of joy, we laugh together.

On days of despair, we cry together.

And on every day, regardless of who is in power in Washington, or in Austin or in your town, on every single day we offer love and hope.

That will never change.

We promise that our voice will never be silenced, our hope will ever be present, and our love always unconditional.
