Today, we are outraged. As parents of LGBTQ+ children and leaders of a supportive community of tens of thousands, we have witnessed firsthand the pain caused by the church’s anti-gay false teachings, beliefs and actions, and the escalating legislative attacks on our transgender loved ones. It is time to stand up, speak out, and unconditionally love and support our LGBTQ+ loved ones. Let us not lose hope for a future where love triumphs over hate.
For centuries, the church has been a place where individuals seek solace, guidance, and acceptance. However, we cannot ignore the painful truth that many LGBTQ+ individuals have been met with rejection and condemnation from those claiming to follow Jesus. His teachings of love, compassion, and inclusion have been forgotten by much of the conservative evangelical church when it comes to their LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters, and so many others.
We have seen the tears of LGBTQ+ people, heard their stories of indefensible hate and rejection, and witnessed them being ostracized and alienated from their communities. It breaks our hearts to see LGBTQ+ children and adults, as well as their supportive family members, subjected to discrimination in a place that should offer them refuge. It is a betrayal of the very principles that religious institutions claim to uphold.
Recently, we have witnessed an alarming surge in attacks on the transgender community through legislation, and we expect more of that in the coming months. Bills that seek to deny transgender individuals access to healthcare, safety, and even public restrooms. These discriminatory laws not only dehumanize transgender individuals but also perpetuate a dangerous narrative that erases their identities and diminishes their worth.
As parents and as leaders of a supportive community, we have witnessed the immense strength and resilience of transgender people. We have seen them navigate a world that often refuses to acknowledge their existence, let alone embrace their true selves. It is maddening to see efforts targeting the most vulnerable members of our society, stripping them of their rights and subjecting them to further marginalization. It is a blatant violation of their human dignity, and it is indefensible.
The time for silence and complacency is over. If not now, when? If you are already involved, thank you. We want to encourage and strengthen you in any way we can. If you are not yet involved, we must take a stand against the anti-gay treatment by the church and the attacks on the transgender community. We must be vocal advocates for change and catalysts. Here are some actionable steps we can take together:
- Educate ourselves and others: Seek out resources, articles, and books that shed light on LGBTQ+ experiences and issues. Share this knowledge with friends, family, and members of your faith community. Foster open and respectful conversations to challenge prejudice and create understanding.
- Support LGBTQ+ organizations: Donate to and volunteer with organizations that actively support and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. By lending our time, resources, and skills, we can help create safe spaces and provide vital support for those in need.
- Stand with your LGBTQ+ loved ones: Show unwavering love, acceptance, and support to the LGBTQ+ individuals in your life. Celebrate their identities and validate their experiences. Be their allies, even when it feels uncomfortable or challenging. Remember, love transcends differences.
- Engage in activism: Attend rallies, demonstrations, and community events that fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Write to your elected officials expressing your concerns about discriminatory legislation and advocate for inclusive policies that protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
In the midst of a difficult time, we can ignite a revolution of love, compassion, and acceptance. Let us be the change we wish to see in the world, creating a future where love triumphs over hate. By standing up, speaking out, and unconditionally loving and supporting our LGBTQ+ loved ones, we can pave the way for a more inclusive society.
Remember, change starts with each of us. Let us walk this path together, guided by hope, and create a world where everyone is seen, heard, and loved.
