Dallas police chief tells young black men to do this instead of protesting – and America loves him for it

Dallas Police Chief David Brown has had a difficult time since losing five of his officers in the shootings during a Black Lives Matter protest in the city. But through it all, his leadership in the face of these trials has been an inspiration to us all.

Now, Chief Brown is hoping to inspire new recruits to the force, telling the young black protesters to join up and help fix the system they protest:

“Become a part of the solution. Serve your community. Don’t be a part of the problem. We’re hiring. We’re hiring. Get off that protest line and put an application in. And we’ll put you in your neighborhood and we will help you resolve some of the problems you’re protesting about.”

And Brown practices what he preaches, too. In a recent press conference, he explained that he was inspired to join the police force after witnessing his friends and neighbors succumb to the crimes associated with the crack epidemic that swept Dallas in the 1980s. So much so, that he left a full ride at UT Austin to become a police officer. Brown said it broke his heart to see his city fall apart.

But since he isn’t the type of person to complain or protest, he decided to “get involved and do something about it by becoming part of the solution.”

It hasn’t been easy for Brown during his career. He has seen much tragedy, including his partner who was shot while on duty in 1988. His own brother was shot dead by drug dealers just a few years after that. And worst of all, his son, 27-year-old David Brown Jr., was killed by police officers in a city near Dallas on Father’s Day. That day in 2010, Brown Jr. was high on PCP and had shot and killed a cop.

“I can’t deny that’s a part of who I am,” Brown said back then. “The families of victims, I know what they go through. My family had to go through that.”

His friends at the time said despite his painful loss, Brown never stopped thinking of the families of the officers involved.

The incident that happened last Thursday in Dallas wasn’t the first time Chief Brown’s officers have been fired upon, either. Just over a year ago, a man shot up the lobby of their headquarters in Dallas after losing a custody battle. Brown has seen it all, and in this case, twice.
