The 2008 former nominee is not attending the GOP convention, after Trump famously critiqued his war record. “He’s not a war hero,” said the 2016 nominee. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

According to Politico, McCain has spoken at every Republican National Convention since 1984. This year, when the convention started, he was “1,700 miles away, trying to avoid talking about Donald Trump. Was Trump the reason he was skipping the convention this year? ‘No,’ McCain told reporters.”
