2. NBA Cleveland Cavaliers player Dion Waiters
When NBA Cleveland Cavaliers player Dion Waiters missed the national anthem before a Utah Jazz game and was absent when the announcers called the starting line-ups, people noticed.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group quoted Waiters on Friday saying, “It’s because of my religion. That’s why I stayed in the locker room.”
Waiters had just rededicated himself to his Muslim faith.
Three days later, he said it was a “big misunderstanding,” that he was doing his “normal routine” in the locker room and had simply missed the anthem, but many fans didn’t buy it.
“I don’t really want to talk about that, my religion,” he said. “I don’t really want to talk about that. I want to talk about basketball.”
