3. When haters targeted us because we adopted a black child.
After we adopted a beautiful two and a half year old from Ethiopia, we were targeted online by white nationalists. I know, I know. Saying someone harassed you on Twitter is like loudly proclaiming “water is wet!” But still. What happened to us on Twitter should run cold shivers down anyone’s neck. Twitter haters began spreading the “news” that I had been unfaithful to my husband with black men, which is how we ended up with a black child. They uploaded graphic GIFs of black people committing suicide on my blog and threatened to rape me. (I wrote this about the very beginning of the racial tweets in the Washington Post, but little did I know it would get much, much worse.)
Still, I did nothing to protect myself.
