By now, you’ve probably read about the recorded conversation that occurred between Billy Bush and Donald Trump on an “Access” bus which begins with Trump saying he tried to have sex with a married woman and ends with him bragging about how he can grope women without permission. (Watch it above.)
“And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything… Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”
Immediately, Trump supporters went into overdrive trying to defend him usually using one of these 8 responses completely unacceptable arguments:
1. All men talk like this.
They don’t. And frankly, if you are a man saying this, I find your circle of friends suspicious. As David French wrote, “Trump’s defenders will try to claim that’s just guys being guys – that men just talk like this. Wrong. And even when men do speak crudely about women, only the worst of the worst brag about groping or attempts at adultery.”
2. This is an aberration for Trump.
It’s not. He wrote about seducing married women in two of his books:
“If I told the real stories of my experiences with women, often seemingly very happily married and important women, this book would be a guaranteed best-seller,” Trump — “The Art of the Comeback.”
and
What kind of women has Trump been with? “Beautiful, famous, successful, married — I’ve had them all, secretly, the world’s biggest names.” — “Think Big and Kick Ass”
3. No one could have predicted this.
See above. He admitted to seducing married women in two books. Also, one of the producers of The Apprentice tweeted this very unsurprising revelation:
As a producer on seasons 1 & 2 of #theapprentice I assure you: when it comes to the #trumptapes there are far worse. #justthebegininng
