On Friday we celebrated our fifth anniversary. It was somehow appropriate that this year, we spent it at home, with a man coming by to do routine maintenance on the furnace. We held babies, played with Maggie, folded laundry, and made bottles. It was, in a lot of ways, a completely ordinary day.
Then, a wonderful friend (and fellow twin mama) who lives down the street gave us a tremendous gift; a meal alone. She came down and watched the babies (after Maggie had gone to bed) so that Atticus and I could bring our take-out sushi and San Pellegrino upstairs for an anniversary dinner, complete with chocolate for dessert and music fit for slow dancing.
It wasn’t Paris, New York, or Chicago. It wasn’t even downtown Indy. But it was a completely perfect way to celebrate the life we’ve built together (with God’s infinite grace and mercy) these last 5 years.
(You think they knew what they were in for? Nah.)
Hope. Joy. Suffering. Blessings. Life.
At our wedding reception, Atticus’ dad, who was also the best man, read a poem during his toast; Master Speed by Robert Frost. In part the poem reads, “Two such as you with such a master speed
Cannot be parted nor be swept away
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar.”
Wing to wing and oar to oar in Rome.
That basically sums it up.
I also heard this old country song recently and laughed out loud because it was just…perfect. Five years later, and its just another day in paradise.
The kids screaming, phone ringing
Dog barking at the mailman bringing
That stack of bills – overdue
Good morning baby, how are you?
Got a half hour, quick shower
Take a drink of milk but the milk’s gone sour
My funny face makes you laugh
Twist the top on and I put it back
There goes the washing machine
Baby, don’t kick it.
I promise I’ll fix it
Long about a million other things
Well, it’s ok. It’s so nice.
It’s just another day in paradise
Well, there’s no place that
I’d rather be
Well, it’s two hearts
And one dream
I wouldn’t trade it for anything
And I ask the lord every night
For just another day in paradise.
