1. This morning was the procedure to remove the remaining part of the pregnancy. It was not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be, due in large part to the drugs they administered beforehand, and the excellent quality of care I received at the hospital. The pain and bleeding has been minimal, which is an absolute blessing.  The hospital chaplain brought us the remains of our baby, which we got to hold (in a container wrapped in a... Read more

On March 3, I took a pregnancy test, and was excited to realize that I was pregnant with my husband and I’s first child. We, of course, began thinking of all the things we would need to do to welcome a baby. I started taking prenatal vitamins, stopped taking my diabetes medication and switched to insulin, and made many doctor appointments.  One week after the positive test, on Friday, March 13, I went into the doctors office for an ultrasound.... Read more

Thursday is a much more important feast day in the Church, that of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary, the Mother of God, and the earthly father of Jesus. Some reflections from Pope John Paul II on the feast of St. Joseph, the model for workers, husbands, and fathers, as well as the holy protector of the family. “Here is the wise and faithful servant, whom the Lord has put in charge of his household” (cf. Lk 12: 42). This... Read more

Today is the feast of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The breastplate of St. Patrick is a beautiful, holy prayer of dependence on and belief in the all-encompassing power of God. My family certainly needs to be reminded of that this week. St. Patrick’s Breastplate I bind to myself today The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity: I believe the Trinity in the Unity The Creator of the Universe. I bind to myself today The virtue... Read more

Yesterday we received ashes on our heads in the conspicuous shape of a cross, in order to remind ourselves and the world, “remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return”.   My husband and I were getting some sandwiches for dinner before driving home to Chicago from Indianapolis, where he had been taking the Bar Exam and I had been recovering from a staff infection. As we sat down to eat our small dinner, a family with two young... Read more

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — Doctors don’t have to tell 18-year-old “Rose” (who doesn’t want to reveal her real name) the importance of using a condom every time she has sex. STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can result in infertility, said Dr. Yolanda Wimberly, left. “There really is a limit to how much you can trust somebody,” the young woman said. At 14, Rose contracted two sexually transmitted diseases: gonorrhea and chlamydia. She said she got the STDs... Read more

My alter ego last night at the Roaring 20’s party was Sadie. (Since I am named after my great-grandmother, who did go by Sadie in the 1920’s). In honor of my pseudonym…     Happy Sunday! Read more

Tomorrow night one of my friends is hosting a Roaring 20’s party! Her apartment will be turned into a ‘speakeasy’ and we must all wear costumes. Needless to say, I am BEYOND excited.  I’m wearing a basic black drop-waisted, knee-length dress and then accessorizing it to the hilt with a: silver beaded cap, many strands of silver and pearls, a big shiny costume-y ring, and of course my beautiful engagement and wedding ring.  I have shoes:       ... Read more
