“We Do Not Consider Ourselves a Christian Nation”

When he was in Turkey, President Obama made this statement:

“Although … we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation, or a Muslim nation,” said Obama. “We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.”

OK, only individual human beings–not institutions as such–can be Christians. But does his statement go too far? Here “Christian” is an adjective, not a noun. And who is “we”? SOME Americans do consider this to be a Christian nation. Do they not count?
