I’ve learned about some first-rate resources and sources of resources that I wanted to let you know about:
C. F. W. Walther was the founder of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, a man whom historian Mark Noll has described as one of the greatest theologians on American soil. The LCMS back then published a periodical entitled Der Lutheraner (“the Lutheran”), which was completely written by Walther, consisting of reflections on theology and pastoral care that are still relevant today. Too bad for most of us that they are all in German. But now Mark V Publications, among its other worthy translation projects, is offering free English translations of Der Lutheraner. The translator will be sending out the different issues one by one as a .pdf file via e-mail. All you have to do is register at the site linked above. To repeat, it’s free!
Edward Naumann has published an edition of
the Latin version of Luther’s Small Catechism. This was the translation that spread the catechism throughout Europe, since the different European nations knew Latin, whereas they did not know German. The beauty of this particular edition is that it contains notes on all of the Latin grammar and constructions, making it a Latin textbook! Schools, homeschools, and autodidacts will find Luther’s Latin catechism a great way to study Latin, learning some great theology along the way. (I wrote the preface.)
Then there is Magdeburg Press, named after the Lutheran city whose entire population of some 30,000 were martyred for their faith during the Thirty Years War. This new venture is putting out theological classics and even some contemporary fiction.
I mustn’t forget Repristination Press, which now has a massive catalog of English translations of 16th and 17th century theological classics.
Do you know of others? The above all have a Lutheran flavor, but feel free to list other worthy small press or internet publishing ventures.
UPDATE: The great Cranach nation has moved the Latin Catechism from an Amazon sales ranking of 415,000 this morning to 30,000 this evening! At this rate, it will become a bestseller and Hollywood producers will be trying to buy the movie rights!
