Luther tourism

Luther tourism

The travel section of yesterday’s Washington Post featured a big, three-page lead article on “Luther tourism,” visiting the sites in Germany associated with Martin Luther, with a detailed account of the author’s visits to Wittenberg, Erfurt, Worms, and other places. It’s a good article–check out the revelries in the “Lutherstube” at the Wartburg, which combines drinking games with readings from “Table Talk”–and I’m realizing I’ve got to make this pilgrimage. Next summer I’ll be teaching at the International Institute of Apologetics and Human Rights, with John Warwick Montgomery and Craig Parton among others, in Strasbourg, France, close to the German border, July 6-17. Afterwards, maybe I could dash over to the Luther sites.

Have any of you done that? Any tips on where to stay, etc.? Can a person just rent a high-performance German car and cruise over to Wittenberg on the Autobahn with no speed limits? Or do you need to make arrangements, sign up for a tour, or such like?
