South Carolina primary & Nevada caucus

South Carolina primary & Nevada caucus

Saturday is a big day for the presidential race.  The Republicans will have a primary election in South Carolina.  And the Democrats will have caucuses in Nevada.

The schedule gets complicated:  The Democrats will vote in South Carolina a week later, on February 27.  The Republicans will hold their Nevada caucuses on Tuesday, February 23.

The polls show Trump with a strong lead in South Carolina, though Cruz has overtaken him nationally.  Can Cruz stage an upset, or get enough delegates to make it close?  Can Rubio make himself the alternative to both Trump and Cruz?  Expect lots of dropouts among those who don’t do well in South Carolina.

And can Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton in the South?  If so, Clinton is in big trouble.

In honor of South Carolina, we’ll have some election-related posts today.  Tomorrow, we’ll have a special weekend post to discuss the results.

From 2016 Primary Schedule | 2016 Election Central:

Saturday, February 20, Nevada caucus (Democrats) [number of delegates] 43 Closed [for party members only]

Saturday, February 20, South Carolina primary election (Republicans) 50 [delegates] Open  [non-party members may vote]

Tuesday, February 23,  Nevada caucus (Republicans) 30 Closed

Saturday, February 27 South Carolina primary (Democrats) 59 Open
