The Trump administration is being investigated by the FBI. But now the FBI is also being investigated!
It started with a lead agent on the Trump case, Peter Strzok, being caught sending anti-Trump e-mails, a clear case of bias. So Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller took him off the case.
But then there was more. An e-mail was found from Strzok to FBI lawyer Lisa Page–who turns out to be his mistress!–saying this about the prospects for Trump’s election:
“I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office — that there’s no way he gets elected — but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk. It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40 . . .”
An insurance policy against Trump’s election? What is he referring to? Some speculate that this is a threat of violence against the president. But more likely it’s a reference to the Steele dossier, which reports scandalous behavior by Trump in Russia and says that Russia is conspiring to get him elected. That dossier has not only been discredited, it turns out that it was funded by Clinton campaign! And yet the FBI was making use of this document.
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, led by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is investigating the Federal Bureau of Investigation on these matters. The committee has learned allegations of a “secret society” within the FBI that was not only conspiring against Trump but helping to elect Hillary Clinton by squelching the investigation of her illegal e-mails.
Then, lo and behold, five months worth of e-mails–some 50,000 messages–between Strzok and Page that the House committee wants to review have turned out to be missing!
Michael Goodwin explains why all of this is so very wrong in Evidence suggests a massive scandal is brewing at the FBI | New York Post:
Each day brings credible reports suggesting there is a massive scandal involving the top ranks of America’s premier law enforcement agency. The reports, which feature talk among agents of a “secret society” and suddenly missing text messages, point to the existence both of a cabal dedicated to defeating Donald Trump in 2016 and of a plan to let Hillary Clinton skate free in the classified email probe.
If either one is true — and I believe both probably are — it would mean FBI leaders betrayed the nation by abusing their powers in a bid to pick the president.
More support for this view involves the FBI’s use of the Russian dossier on Trump that was paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. It is almost certain that the FBI used the dossier to get FISA court warrants to spy on Trump associates, meaning it used the opposition research of the party in power to convince a court to let it spy on the candidate of the other party — likely without telling the court of the dossier’s political link.
Even worse, there is growing reason to believe someone in President Barack Obama’s administration turned over classified information about Trump to the Clinton campaign.
As one former federal prosecutor put it, “It doesn’t get worse than that.”
What are we to make of this? Is the alleged FBI scandal a counter-narrative constructed by Trump supporters to discredit the agency’s investigation of him? (Note the postmodernism in that sentence.) I suspect Trump’s critics will say so. But how do they account for the evidence and the mysteriously missing evidence as uncovered by the House committee?
Is this evidence of the “deep state” of federal officials that don’t want Trump to be president and are governing the nation without him? Or is everyone in Washington tainted by corruption as they investigate each other? Or what?
UPDATE: The missing messages–apparently texts rather than e-mails–have been recovered!
