Nationalists win big in election May 27, 2014

The different countries that constitute the European Union held elections on Sunday for the European parliament.  Political parties that oppose the European Union won big, taking over a third of the parliamentary seats.  The winners included anti-immigration parties, traditional conservatives, and even neo-Nazi groups.

How do you account for this apparent rise of nationalism in a supposedly globalist and cosmopolitan era?  What does this mean for the United States?  Do you see any potential problems that this could bring?

The European establishment was hit by a political ‘earthquake’ last night after voters elected a raft of anti-immigration, Eurosceptic and far-Right politicians across the continent.

The National Front won a historic victory in France and the anti-EU People’s Party won in Denmark.

There were also wins for Eurosceptic and right-wing parties in Austria, Italy, Poland and Hungary.

Far-Right parties made big gains in Greece and neo-Nazis won a seat in Germany.

The unprecedented surge in support for parties hostile to the EU in other countries mirrored the victory for Nigel Farage’s Ukip.

Overall, Eurosceptic parties doubled their representation in the European Parliament and now hold a third of all seats. The results were seen as a withering indictment of European leaders and the federalist direction of EU politics.
