Do You Intertwine Motherhood with Christianity?

Do You Intertwine Motherhood with Christianity? August 11, 2024

Motherhood
As a mother, Keri is always there for Jayce.

Intertwine Motherhood with Christianity. Those two things go together very well, but it is often difficult to gracefully intertwine them. Often, both self and Christianity get lost.

Motherhood holds a very clear definition. Dictionary.com lists the first entry as “the state of being a mother.”

Mothers are caregivers. Their sole purpose is to raise children to be happy, healthy and productive. Christian mothers have a purpose that includes sharing and teaching about Christianity and instilling Christian values.

How do you effectively intertwine Christianity and Motherhood?

First and foremost, you must truly know who you are as a person as well as who God has created you to be. There are many ways to learn more about yourself.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Journal and reflect on the past
  • Dream big
  • Take assessments
  • Try new things
  • Read the Bible
  • Pray

Oftentimes, mothers lose themselves in the everyday chores of fulfilling their role. Even though it is a blessing to be a mother, it does come with challenges. Spend time on the suggestions above, even if just a few minutes at a time.

Journaling helps Find Self.

Journaling helps you remember what brings you joy, sadness, satisfaction and challenges. When you reflect on these entries, it becomes clearer what you have talent for (things that come easy and bring happiness) and what you should not do. When we spend time using our talents, we are more fulfilled. We are happier.

Dream Big!

We are often told that dreams are unattainable and a waste of time. We are told to be practical. If people didn’t dream, we would not have electricity, cars, indoor plumbing or the internet (to name just a few things)!

Spend time dreaming. Document those dreams. Turn them into plans. I highly recommend reading the book, “The Dream Manager” by Matthew Kelly. This book demonstrates what can happen when we enable dreams.

Assessments can be a Quick Look into Your Inner Self.

I find CliftonStrengths® to be a truly confirming and enlightening resource as a guide to who you are. You can read more about that in a blog I wrote on my website. CliftonStrengths® has helped confirm who I innately am and guides me to be who God created me to be.

Trying New Things Helps You Push Your Limits, Creativity and Strengths.

We often stay in our comfort zones, causing us to remain stagnant through life. God created you to be more. Find it. During this time, do not neglect your family or any other responsibilities you may have. Being creative or a good time manager will help you work it into your already busy schedule.

Read the Bible.

Join discussion groups or write down your thoughts. What is God saying to you? Where is God guiding you? Ensure you have an open heart and open mind so that you can listen and hear what God is telling you. You can even start with a prayer similar to this:

“Dear God, I ask you to guide me to the words you want me to hear. I ask the Holy Spirit to move me to understanding Your message and for Jesus to help me feel the love You are giving me through Your words. I remain open to Your message as I spend time with You. Amen.” (Michele Gunn)

Pray.

Remember that prayer is a conversation with God. Talk with Him (notice I didn’t say talk TO Him) often,

listening for His response. Many things can be revealed through prayer. Let Him reveal YOU.

Through these processes, discern who God created you to be.

Now that you have started exploring who you are and who God created you to be, where is your faith? Christianity should be at the foundation of who you are.

Questions you should ask yourself are:

  • Do you have a strong foundation in faith?
  • Can you articulate your beliefs?
  • Do your actions speak about your faith?
  • How do you teach your faith to other adults?
  • How do you teach your faith to your kids?

Time to dig into  your faith and explore what you know, what you believe and how you live those beliefs. Many times, we do not truly develop our faith until we have kids. That often leads to a shaky foundation for the family. Now is always better than never so let’s discover more!

Do You have a Strong Foundation in Faith?

Do you follow a specific religion or do you classify yourself as spiritual? If you identify with a specific religion, are you practicing it or just identifying with it? What is your knowledge level? It is never too late to learn. In fact, learning more about your faith creates a stronger foundation and stronger belief.

Can You Articulate Your Beliefs?

You need to be able to explain what you believe and why. Kids will ask questions as they question everything. You will hear “Why do we have to go to church” and “Why do we pray”, among many, many more questions. As a mother, you are a fount of knowledge for your kids in every area of their life. Faith and Christianity are topics that society often downplays or even negates. The ability for you to articulate to your children will make a huge impact.

Do Your Actions in Motherhood Speak about Your Christianity?

Your actions must align with your words. Practice what you preach. Demonstrate your Christianity. Always be kind even when it is difficult. Your kids are paying attention. They will remember that one time you lost it versus the many times you showed Grace.

How Do You Teach Your Faith to Other Adults?

Teaching other adults, like your spouse or significant other, is a stepping stone for teaching your kids. The more you share your faith the easier it becomes. Plus, your kids will see what you are doing. They will see you authentically living your faith without fear of judgment.

How Do You Teach Your Faith to Your Kids?

Kids start learning as soon as they are born. Incorporating  your faith in your everyday words and actions creates the best role model for living authentically in faith. Providing explanations as to how something started or why you do or say it, provides an ongoing faith education for your child. Let them ask questions! If you do not know the answer, tell them that and then find out. This shows your child that you do not need all of the answers and that faith includes learning.

Motherhood and Christianity are Deeply Intertwined.

As you navigate the challenges and blessings of being a Christian mother, remember that it’s okay to prioritize your personal growth and spiritual development. By knowing who you are in Christ, nurturing your faith, and living authentically, you set a powerful and faith-filled example for your children and those around you.

Take the time to reflect, dream, and seek God’s guidance through prayer and scripture. Let your actions speak as loudly as your words, and don’t be afraid to share your faith openly with your family and others.

As you grow in motherhood and faith, make small, intentional changes in your daily life that reflect your values and beliefs. Start with just one or two things that you read above and gradually incorporate more.

Your journey as a Christian mother is a continuous process of growth and learning, but every step you take strengthens the foundation of faith you are building for yourself and your family.

Remember to reach out for community support when needed.

May God bless you on this sacred journey called  Motherhood with Christianity.
