Forming Intentional Disciples by Sherry Weddell is an excellent introduction to the topic of evangelization and discipleship. The first half of the book is devoted to proving that this matters — that church-as-usual in the US today is not succeeding in helping Catholics build a personal relationship with Jesus, nor in passing on the faith to the next generation. Weddell cites numerous studies, as well as riveting personal accounts, to prove her case.

The second half of the book explores the steps in evangelizing — whether within the parish or beyond its walls — then finishes up with “what’s next?” That is: What do disciples of the Lord do, and how do they fit into parish life?

Though I would have liked more details in the how-to sections, everything Weddell writes matches with my own experiences in evangelization and Christian formation, and I found the book both inspiring and full of practical helps. There is certainly enough material to help anyone get started, and plenty of fodder for thought and practice even for those who are already aware of the issues.

I recommend this book for anyone who is in parish leadership, as well as ordinary lay Catholics ready to take the next step in practicing their faith. Great communication tool for parishes wishing to improve discipleship and Christian formation. My copy isn’t going anywhere — it’s a keeper for certain.
