Angels and Saints: A Biblical Guide to Friendship with God’s Holy Ones by Scott Hahn My rating: 4 of 5 stars This is a solid, understandable book that explains the concept and theology of angels and saints. The last half of the book contains the stories of specific saints and angels, along with an excerpt from a writing about them (usually from a Church Father). It would definitely be a good book to give to someone wondering about the topic.... Read more

Something Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It by Jennifer Fulwiler My rating: 5 of 5 stars SHORT VERSION: I can think of an awful lot of people who I’d give this book to: Christians trying to understand atheists (like a pal of mine who said, “I just don’t know how those people don’t believe in God.” I almost shoved my copy into her hands. Almost.) Atheists trying to understand Christians. Protestants trying to understand... Read more

Innocence: A Novel by Dean Koontz I specifically bought this book based on an interview with the author and Raymond Arroro of EWTN. When I added it to my Goodread’s reading list I noticed that the ratings of this book were very mixed. As one of my friends noted, that people either loved or hated it. I had expected an ending something like the in the third of the Divergence’s series that drew the same divide. What I found was... Read more

Over the years, I’ve gathered quite a library of Mary books. In fact, they have their own shelf (and, before long, I suspect there will be more than one shelf). Because May is Mary’s month, I thought it would be a good time to share five of my favorites with you. Mary, Mother of the Son (3 volumes) By Mark Shea (Catholic Answers, 2009) These books are indispensable, down-to-earth, and just plain awesome. They are out of print (I heard rumors of... Read more

Boxers & Saints Boxed Set by Gene Luen Yang My rating: 5 of 5 stars Jen Ambrose’s discussion both introduced me to these books and got me interested. Then I saw that other much trusted readers (the Hodges) were all on board and that got me really, really interested. These are graphic novels which I would have sworn is a medium I do not enjoy, until I got these from the library and simply could not put them down. Boxers... Read more

I love May for a LOT of reasons, not least of which because it’s a month of usually lovely weather. This May finds me reading two books that are helping me appreciate the loveliness of two of my favorite people: Jesus and Mary. One is a book you’d expect to use for prayer, and the other is a book that was almost intimidating in its topic and length. Celebrating Mary: A Collection of Praises and Prayers This is a Marian... Read more

Something Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It by Jennifer Fulwiler Snagged a review copy! This got here yesterday afternoon. FIRST IMPRESSIONSI have to say I flipped to the first page, where the camp counselor is going down the line publicly asking the little girls if they give their heart to Jesus, and realized already that Jennifer and I had common attitudes at similar ages. Not gonna join something we can’t really believe in. As... Read more

Why Science Does Not Disprove God by Amir D. Aczel My rating: 3 of 5 stars Short version: I want to believe Aczel’s arguments. However, some of the inaccuracies in nonscientific areas made me wonder if he was trustworthy in the science. Full Review THE GOOD The purpose of this book is to defend the integrity of science. Amir d. Aczel, mathematician and science journalist, was on stage listening to prominent biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins when he decided he’d... Read more

Suspect by Robert Crais My rating: 4 of 5 stars This is a book any dog lover will enjoy. That is if they also enjoy thriller/mystery books. A traumatized police officer and a traumatized war dog (German Shepherd Maggie) help each other get back to full life while working on the case that killed the officer’s partner. This sounds sappy but is not. It occasionally shows the dog’s point of view and it is as canine as one could wish.... Read more
