John 13: Love Serves

John 13: Love Serves April 25, 2011

A few months ago, I spoke at a friend’s church on John 13 entitled “Love Serves.” Simply put, Jesus was the Son of God and about to give his life for our sins. He had a lot more important stuff happening than washing the feet of his disciples. Yet he stooped down to clean the dirty toes of those he knew would soon abandon him, even Judas.

Why? Because love serves. Love is not about “what I want” but doing what God wants. Washing feet was a physical and practical example of service Jesus left for his first followers and to us. The closer we walk with God, the deeper our level of service to others should be. As Jesus said:

“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
