John 2: Jesus the Winemaker

John 2: Jesus the Winemaker April 8, 2011

According to John 2, Jesus was a winemaker.

In fact, making wine was his first miracle. Of course, before refrigeration, nearly everyone drank fermented beverages, so this did not carry the social stigma often associated with it today. The actual problem in John 2 was that Jesus was at a wedding and the wine had run out.

A wedding was a week-long celebration in First-Century Jewish culture. To run out was a big deal, because that left a crowd of people with nothing to drink (clean drinking water was not always easily available either). So Mary, the mother of Jesus, connected Jesus and some servants and he made wine.

The act was practical and helpful.

But it was also spiritual.

Why? Because it is here we are told his disciples believed in him. They were already checking him out and listening to his teachings. Now they believed he was the Messiah.

Miracles were used by Jesus to point people toward him. When a true miracle happens today, it would make sense that this is still the purpose, to point our frail human hearts to the perfect Savior of the world.

So, yes, Jesus was a winemaker, but that was not the main point of story. The highlight is that Jesus is God and we are to live our lives accordingly.
