Ephesians 4: A Life Worthy of the Calling

Ephesians 4: A Life Worthy of the Calling August 30, 2011

“I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” -Ephesians 4:1

Ephesians 4 is loaded with richness. I couldn’t get past the first verse: “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Since we have been so blessed by God, we are to live a life worthy of what calling? The call of Christ. The Christ who came, died, and rose on our behalf desires for us to live like he did.

This overwhelming standard is often overlooked. For example, we find ourselves content to do better than the next person or “at least I’m not as bad as _____.” But that is not the goal. The goal is to increasingly become like Christ, the one we serve.

With this in mind, our trivial, daily pursuits take on new meaning because they are done for Christ. They are part of our calling. Likewise, time wasting activities that focus on our selfish desires can no longer satisfy. Why? These activities are not part of a life worthy of the calling.

As the following verses in the chapter share, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, and peace are our new life goals. This is a life worthy of the calling of Christ. Let us pursue this life today.
