Jude 1: Contend for the Faith

Jude 1: Contend for the Faith November 30, 2011

“Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” -Jude 1:3

Jude cared deeply about the spiritual condition of his readers. By the third verse, he is “eager” to write about their common salvation in Jesus. Yet there was one problem.

The problem was bad information. Instead of writing about salvation, Jude had to correct some erroneous ideas that were spreading throughout the early church. Unauthorized teachers were corrupting the true message of Jesus, leading some believers to doubt or question their faith.

Jude felt compelled to write to urge his readers to “contend for the faith.” This meant they were to stand up and be a voice for the true teachings of Jesus, speaking up when others would seek to spread false ideas about their Lord.

What Jude wrote then applies to us in a similar way today. When we see untrue information presented about Jesus and his teachings, we are called to speak up, speak out, and communicate the true gospel of Christ. Today, when you find Jesus spoken against, don’t shrink back; speak out. Contend for the faith.
