Revelation 11: Our Eternal Lord

Revelation 11: Our Eternal Lord 2011-12-15T11:33:17-05:00

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was…” -Revelation 11:17

At the sound of the seventh trumpet, the twenty-four elders in John’s vision declared, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
the One who is and who was…” This brief statement speaks volumes regarding a little-discussed fact regarding Jesus–he is eternal.

The early church developed creeds to define this issue of Christ’s eternal nature. Modern religious movements sometimes dismiss it, along with skeptics who claim Jesus was only a man or created being. Yet Scripture is clear that the One who lived among us was involved in every aspect of creating our universe. He is one with the Father and the Spirit. Jesus is God. He is eternal

This is not an obscure theological debate, but rather an essential attribute of Jesus Christ. If he is not eternal, he is not God. But if he is eternal and is “the One who is and who was” then he is much more than an enlightened man or good teacher; he is Lord.

Our eternal Lord.
