Revelation 22: Come, Lord Jesus

Revelation 22: Come, Lord Jesus

20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.

-Revelation 22:20-22

The New Testament appropriately ends with a vision of God with his people in a new heavens and new earth. Upon the end of the vision, John concludes with saying, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” In these four words, he unfolds three insightful ideas.

“Amen.” The word that concludes our prayers means “truly” or “yes.” John concludes with a sense of “Yes, this is it. This is the way it is to end.”

“Come.” Rather than expressing fear upon the vision of God’s final judgments and return, John expresses anticipation. He wants what he envisioned to take place.

“Lord Jesus.” John recognizes Jesus for who he is–“Lord,” God, and “Jesus,” the Messiah. Both Creator and Redeemer are One, revealed clearly in the end through the Spirit of God, the third person of the God we have come to understand as Triune.

As I completed handwriting the final words of the New Testament this year, I looked back with same emotions. “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”

And, as John concluded, “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.”
