Genesis 23: Mourning the Loss of a Loved One

Genesis 23: Mourning the Loss of a Loved One 2012-02-01T11:59:36-05:00

“1 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.” -Genesis 23:1-2

When Abraham’s wife died, we discover how deep his love was for her. We are told he mourned and wept over her. Weeping would not be surprising at the death of a Middle Eastern man’s wife. Mourning would. Men tend to cry quietly. Abraham openly wept. He could not or would not contain his emotion. The woman he had loved for a lifetime was now gone.

The rest of the chapter displays Abraham’s desire to bury Sarah properly. He bought a field with a cave in which he placed her body. Later we read Abraham would be buried there in Hebron as well. He end well with Sarah. He ended his earthly life buried beside her as well.
